Back Student Case Study - - 3 minute read.
Callum Moss

Callum Moss is a First Year student on the MSc Physiotherapy (pre-registration) course at AECC University College. We recently caught up with him to hear more about his decision to study to become a physiotherapist and why AECC UC is an appealing specialist university.

Becoming A Physiotherapist

“When I was fifteen, I broke my leg playing football. I had to get my leg rebuilt and had a plate put in. I had a lot of hydrotherapy and had to learn to walk again.

“As soon as I had the plate taken out, I actually broke my leg again because I was so weak. This was my first introduction to the world of therapy.

“I studied sport for a bit and did a lot of on and off sports therapy as a result. I was looking for what I wanted to do as a career, and I felt the physiotherapy route was a natural progression for me. I want to help people out who were in the same situation as me when I was fifteen.”

A Great Environment

“The course is intensive which is really good as I find it the best way to learn. There’s autonomy involved, so the course is preparing us for what it’s going to be like in the industry.

“The cohort I am a part of is great. Everyone is like-minded and has the same goal. We are all determined and want to learn, which makes AECC UC a great environment to be a part of.

“The tutors are supportive and willing to go the extra mile to help. The subject matter is also interesting, and I really feel like I’m learning to help people. This course has helped me feel ready to go out and complete my placements.”

Real World Experiences

“I have my first placement in June. During this time, I could be based in a hospital, community setting or Intensive Care Unit. I could be working with neurological, cardiovascular, or respiratory patients. I could be working with patients, in the community, with multiple long-term conditions neurological, respiratory and MSK conditions.

“We shadow professionals for 1,000 hours during placements. This will help us decide what discipline we want to go into and means we get real-world experiences. I am being open minded and looking forward to learning that here are more interests than what I previously thought.”

AECC UC Has Everything We Need

“I studied for my undergraduate degree in Bournemouth, so I had a life set up here and knew the town well.

“It’s hard to be bored here as you’ve got the beach and there’s a good social vibe in the city centre. You’ve also got the New Forest.

“There are lots of activities to do and lots of days out you can have. It’s especially amazing in the summer.

“As it’s a specialist university, I knew the students would all have similar interests. I’m always bumping into someone I know here.

“There’s a nice atmosphere amongst the place and AECC UC has everything we could need.”

A Specialist University

“AECC UC is a university that focuses on specific disciplines. These courses are the core focus. I like knowing that when I learn here, I am learning somewhere specialist.

“As a specialist university, you’re around like-minded people and there’s a good focus around the place as everyone is learning similar things which can be useful.

“I also like that I get to interact with real patients during my course. We access the labs and look at tissues and real-life stuff.

“When I saw AECC was a health sciences university I knew they would have access to some really great equipment.”

Ambitions For the Future

“I want to work outside of the UK. I picked this course and this industry as I knew it would allow me to go and take my knowledge to other places.

“I’d like to get back into professional football and do rehabilitation with that.”
